In that case even the universe is alive! All are a part of a grand cyclical evolutionary process, from big bang to big crunch and so on, which has the potential to create us human beings from within it at certain time and then destroy us at certain time (Hence Bible's saying "there is time for everything).
We are like whirlpools (called dissipative structures by some scientists) in the river-like flow of energy of this grand evolutionary process and now forgetting this flow have begun to think we are separate from it, that we have free-will and so on, that we can take it wherever we want with that actually wholly conditioned free-will (if it were really true we would soon create such a mess here with our puny imprisoned/conditioned intellects that we would bag for death than so-called life. Nature knows best.
In that grand evolutionary flow of river of energy everything originates, evolves and ends in terms of four basic forces or interactions as I have explained in my book Self Designed Universe. Understanding this while doing what we feel like doing at any time is the greatest spiritual achievement, or rather is even beyond spiritual achievement, it is the achievement of Tao-ic proportions. If Lao Tzu of Tao te Ching fame was alive today he would have explained Tao or renamed Tao as Tao of four basic interactions. For reading more visit my blog

PS: The chart alongside shows what the four basic interactions have created with their special characteristics on various evolutionary cycles.
