Though , as they say, curiosity kills the cat, some of the readers may still be curious to know a bit more about this thing called Harb or Harbhajan Singh. I just happened to find this bio in my old documents and thought it will serve the purpose. So welcome if anybody is interested.Er. Harbhajan Singh
Er. Harbhajan Singh was born in Punjab, India, on Dec, 17, 1949. His mother was a deeply religious woman and had blind faith in God. His father was religious no doubt but shunned blind faith wherever possible. According to Harbhajan Singh, his mother gave him “faith and spirituality,” his father, “reason and science.”
Studying in local schools throughout, Harbhajan Singh graduated in civil engineering from Punjab in 1971. He never won distinction in studies though his teachers always had a high opinion of him and often told him that he could win any distinction he wished for. Of course no body knew then what he really wished for.
This became clear only when, after graduation, he was into the government service of a civil engineer for a couple of years. While all his friends and colleagues became busy building up their careers he found himself lost in finding answers to what one may say are the eternal questions of mankind: Who am I? Where have I come from? Where am I supposed to go after my so-called death? Has my “I,” my being, some permanent point of reference or is it merely a chance bubble floating meaninglessly in the wilderness of space? What is space, where this world ends, what is beyond that? Could it be that all this (alluding mentally to the world around) never has been? These were some of the questions, which according to him, were his constant companions in those days. The inner turmoil finally resulted in his suspension from the government service.
Then one day while he was sitting alone somewhere, separated from wife and two children, diseased of body and dejected of mind, something entirely unexpected happened. Something like lightening but unaccompanied by usual light and thunder seemed to flux out of his head upwards encompassing simultaneously somehow the whole of the universe into its fold…. Period. He was left with no questions. He calls this his first experience of Oneness.
Soon he rejoined the service. But after eight years of living to the hilt something from within again forced him to resign. Following which he went on a long introspective journey to find out his raison d'ĂȘtre in coming into this world. This finally again led him to the same Oneness he had experienced earlier.
During this period he also happened to lay his hands on Fritzof Capra’s book The Tao of Physics, which introduced him to the latest developments in physics, especially to the fact that the physicists have reduced all the forces working in the universe to four basic ones.
Then one day while walking, he suddenly became aware of almost a wordless dialogue going on inside him: “Mystics, philosophers have always spoken highly of freedom, liberation, nirvana, ultimately for whom and from whom?” one voice seemed to ask.” “For this Oneness and from those four basic forces,” came the reply from an other voice.
And almost simultaneously the whole universal panorama of evolution unfolded before his mind’s eyes in terms of the Oneness getting freedom, or getting disentangled, from four basic forces at myriad hierarchical levels.
After more studies and reflections Harbhajan Singh realized that it is the same Oneness to which religious people call soul, spirit, suchness, sunyata etc. or even God, scientists call supersymmetry, superspace, superforce and philosophers call substance, supersystem, thing-in-itself etc. This led him to his own version of “grandunification not only of forces but of science, philosophy and mysticism as well” as he puts it.
In the ensuing twelve years he wrote his book Self-Designed Universe incorporating in it his above ideas. It is published by Janus Publishing Company UK in Sep, 2004.
Harbhajan Singh lives in Punjab, India with his wife and two major sons. Free from writing his book, he now passes his time by looking after his land and answering questions at AllExperts.com* on the net. Long walks and playing cricket with his sons and their friends whenever possible are his other hobbies.
